Our use of Scripts on this web site

JavaScript - Yes, we do use JavaScript on this web site, but only on selected pages.
  • Our primary use of JavaScript is to display for you pages randomly selected from our various library collections.

  • JavaScript is an integral part of your web browser.

Java - No, we DO NOT use Java from Oracle.
  • Java is a separate application program that must be downloaded and installed in your computer.

  • The Java program then runs the Java "applets" which are downloaded by web pages.

  • We consider Java to require too much overhead on the client machine.

  • Also, we consider Java to be risky, albeit not nearly as risky as ActiveX.

ActiveX - No, we DO NOT use ActiveX from Microsoft.
  • We consider ActiveX to be the most dangerous security risk of all.

  • Unlike Java, ActiveX programs can access your computer's file system.

  • ActiveX allows an application to have full access to operating system capabilities.

  • ActiveX is used in the installation process of many malicious applications.

  • Malicious ActiveX control can read, modify, or delete any file on your computer, or insert a virus into your system.

VBscript - No, we DO NOT use Visual Basic from Microsoft
  • Visual Basic is a separate application program that must be downloaded and installed in your computer.

  • The Visual Basic program then runs the VBscripts which are downloaded by web pages.

  • We consider Visual Basic to require too much overhead on the client machine.

  • Also, we consider VBasic to be somewhat risky, because of its internal use of ActiveX.

Action Script - No, we DO NOT use Action Script from Adobe
  • Shockwave and Flash are separate application programs that must be downloaded and installed in your computer.

  • The Shockwave and Flash programs then runs the Action Script "applets" which are downloaded by web pages.

  • We consider Shockwave and Flash to involve too much spyware.

  • Also, we consider Action Scripts to be increasingly risky, but probably not as risky as ActiveX.
