Science and Christianity
The relationship between science and Christianity is somewhat like oil and water.  Mixing the two is often a challenge.  Keeping them mixed is even more of a challenge.
  1. For one thing, it depends upon your definition and flavor of Christianity and what that entails.
    • Creationists
    • Biblical Literalists
    • Faith Healers
    • etc.

  2. Secondly, it depends upon the science subject.
    • Some Christians rather blindly reject science out of hand.
    • Others ignore the conflicts (often by considering the Bible to be taken other than literally.)
    • Still others just can't be bothered with thinking about it.

Similarly, many Scientists have problems with various religious concepts.  We will discuss more about this later.

  3. Thirdly, it depends upon the period of time in history.
    • The original belief was that the earth was the "center of the universe."  From that belief came the idea that "heaven" was up and that down below ground was the "other destination."

    • Then there was a belief that the sun revolved around the earth.  Every God-fearing Christian of the time was certain of that (else they were persecuted.)

    • Also, it was originally assumed by everyone that the world was flat.  (Columbus only partially proved otherwise.)

    • There are still a few Christians today who deny the pictures of Earth from space.

Creation
The subset of Christians who believe in the Theory of Creation (as described in the Bible) cannot accept the scientific theories about the creation of the world.
  • The "Big Bang" theory is out.
  • The "Theory of Evolution" is certainly out.
  • etc.
(The Creationists have to acknowledge that at least our knowledge of the world has evolved.)

Age of the World
The subset of Christians who believe in the literal translation and interpretation of the Bible cannot accept the scientific views about the age of the world.
  • The "millions of years" idea is uncomprehensible.
  • The "carbon dating" is out.
  • etc.

Medical Treatment
The subset of Christians who believe only in faith healing cannot accept the use of medicine and medical treatment.

Miracles
Scientists often have difficulty with the miracles and other events described in the Bible.
  • The "parting of the sea"
  • Feeding the masses with "loaves and fishes"
  • The "burning bush" and the "tablets of stone"
  • The "raising of the dead"
  • The healing of the blind and the lame.
  • The "turning of water into wine"
  • The "walking on water"
  • The "great flood"
  • etc.
(Even in the Hollywood epics, such happenings are only "illusions" of the special effects artists.)
