Discussion Issue:
Sale and Development of Public Lands
Facts, factoids, concerns, considerations:
  • Ron Sims, when he was King County (WA) Executive, sold of County-owned part-and-rides to developers of (intended to be) low-income housing.  [1]
  • - .
  • This is a "fully predictable result" of ...
The PRO's:
  • We need to shrink the size of government.
  • The government budgets are putting a strain upon the ability to raise tax revenue.
Besides, nobody likes to pay taxes.
  • This is an opportunity for lowering, not raising taxes.
  • The developers help fund the political machines which make our government work.
  • The pirate developers will have an opportunity to make a great deal of money which they will use to create jobs.
Liberal concerns:
  • The land belongs to the people.
  • Private interests would over-develop it to the detriment of the environment.
  • Tax payers would subsequent have to pick up the tab for the resulting demand-load on infrastructure (roads, police and fire protection, etc.).
Conservative concerns:
  • Private enterprise can do a better job than the government.
  • Private enterprise (with a profit motive) is always more efficient than a cost-managed government bureaucracy.
The CON's:
  • Like selling the North Pole (movie)
  • If this continues, the results are fully predictable.
It is an unsustainable economic situation.
Questions:
  • What would be a fair solution?
  • What would King Solomon have done?
  • What would John Galt have done?
