Discussion Issue:
   Capitalism Without Free Enterprise
Facts, factoids, concerns, considerations:
  • The majority of Americans believe in capitalism, and laissez-faire capitalism at that.
  • Most Americans assume they live in a free enterprise system.[1]
  • Market driven economies generally fair better than government-driven economies over the long term.
(e.g., the U.S. has lasted longer than did the U.S.S.R.)
  • The prerequisite for free enterprise is an adequate number of suppliers and an adequate number of consumers.
  • Supply-side economics is not based upon the number of suppliers.
  • The terms "capitalism" and "free enterprise" often get used interchangeably in speech and thought.
Liberal Democrat concerns:
  • Freedom is not free; the 'free market' is not free.
  • Too big to fail leads to too big to not fail.
  • Large, multinational (no-longer American) corporations win big under capitalism by destroying free markets.
  • The 'Haves and Have Nots' continue to diverge.[2]
  • The market is restricted by not enough suppliers.[1]
  • Trickle-down works only with taxes.
Conservative Republican concerns:
  • Capitalism provides the incentive to perform.
  • Government regulations and taxation restrict capitalism
  • Profits are maximized by capitalism, not free markets.[3]
  • Bonuses must be freely based upon capitalism and the market.
Questions:
  • What would be a fair solution?
  • What would King Solomon have done?
  • What would John Galt have done?
