Facts, factoids, concerns, considerations:
- The term Abortion usually refers to the termination of a human pregnancy resulting in the death of the fetus.
- Conception is the joining of the egg and the sperm.
- Some people believe that life begins at conception;
- Others believe that life begins at birth, when the baby takes its first breath.
- Some people believe that the life of the mother takes precedence over the life (or potential life) of the unborn child.
- Others believe that the life (or potential life) of the unborn child takes precedence over the life of the mother.
- Some people believe that only the woman has a right to say what happens to the body and body functions.
- Other people believe that other considerations must be considered, e.g., life of the unborn, society, etc.
- Some believe that rights are not absolute and must be balanced against the interests of the state.
- Some people believe that abortion is not permissible under any circumstances.
- Some believe that abortion is permissible but only if necessary in order to save the life of the mother.
Others believe that abortion is only permissible in order to save the life of the mother or in the case of rape.
- Still other believe that abortion is also permissible if the fetus is likely to have significant health issues.
- And many believe that it is entirely up the mother do decide if she wishes to continue the pregnancy or to terminate it.
- Most objections to abortion are because of religious beliefs that life begins at conception and the taking of any human life is immoral.
- Where abortion is/was not legal, abortions are performed illegally with about 13% of the woman dying due to medical complications.
Where abortion is legal, death of the mother is almost nonexistent.
