Our original (18th century) view of the world was that there was an implicit evil nature to government. The powers of the government must be kept to a minimum.
- Just enough government to provide police protection against obvious criminals.
- Just enough government army to protect against foreign nations.
- Just enough government to represent the United States on the world stage.
As the nation quickly began to evolve from an agrarian economy to an industrial economy, we were forced to accept additional government as necessary and inevitable.
- Criminals are not the only ones who commit criminal acts.
- Nations are not the only external threats to the United States.
- Some rules and referees are needed in the game of intrastate commerce.
The morals and ethics that people have as individuals, do not automatically extend to groups of people (mobs, companies, associations, cartels, etc.)
